Shura (Consultation)

Mutual consultation in decision-making — a praiseworthy principle the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ modelled repeatedly, most vividly at the Battle of Badr.

How it appears in the Seerah

• Whether to fight at Badr: he asked the army four times, waiting until the Ansar — through Sa’d ibn Mu’adh — freely committed, since their Aqabah pledge had been defensive only.
• Where to camp: he changed his position on al-Hubab ibn al-Mundhir’s advice to seize the wells — showing that some of his actions were his own ijtihad (strategy), which the Companions could question, distinct from binding revelation (see Naskh (Abrogation)).

Lessons

Though the Prophet ﷺ received revelation and had no need of counsel, he consulted to teach leadership and to bind his followers to the decision — “Allah’s Hand is upon the congregation.” A true leader seeks the right opinion wherever it lies and acts on it.
