Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (ra) — Seerah Encyclopedia

The closest Companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and, by consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah, the best of the Companions. Among the first adult free men to accept Islam, and the one who converted instantly, without a moment’s doubt. Later the first caliph.

Conversion & rank (EP 011)

When the Prophet ﷺ presented Islam he accepted immediately — “There was no one I invited to Islam who did not hesitate, except Abu Bakr.” Hence the reconciliation of the “first convert” reports: first child = Ali, first adult free man = Abu Bakr, first freed slave = Zayd, first believer overall = Khadijah.
The only Companion referenced in the Quran by pronoun — “the second of the two, when they were in the cave” (9:40) — “the Second of the Two.”
“Were I to take a khalil (intimate friend) other than Allah, it would be Abu Bakr” (Bukhari).

Da’i of the early converts (EP 011)

Through Abu Bakr, four future giants of Quraysh accepted Islam: Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Uthman ibn Affan, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf.

Under persecution (EP 014–017)

One of the first seven to declare Islam publicly; protected by his own clan, yet attacked (he rescued the Prophet ﷺ when Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt tried to strangle him at the Ka’bah — “Would you kill a man for saying ‘My Lord is Allah’?”).
Set out for Abyssinia but was turned back by Ibn al-Daghina, who extended him protection; the Quraysh then barred his public prayer. He built a small prayer-space outside his house — arguably the first masjid — where his weeping recitation drew crowds, until the Quraysh forced him to pray privately.

al-Siddiq — belief in the Isra’ (EP 023)

When Quraysh mocked the Night Journey, Abu Bakr answered, “If he said it, then it is true — I believe him in what is greater than this: that revelation comes to him from the heavens.” From this he was titled al-Siddiq, the truthful affirmer.

Companion of the Hijra (EP 027–028)

The Prophet ﷺ chose him as his sole companion on the Hijra; Abu Bakr wept for joy and prepared two camels (insisting the Prophet ﷺ pay for his). His son Abdullah brought news, his freedman Amir ibn Fuhayra erased tracks, and his daughter Asma — Dhat al-Nitaqayn — provisioned them.
In the Cave of Thawr, fearing the searchers, he was reassured: “What do you think of two, whose third is Allah?” His companionship is affirmed in the Quran — “the second of two” (9:40) — the only Companion so testified; Suraqa saw him riding anxiously beside the calm Prophet ﷺ.

The wager & Uhud (EP 041–050)

The wager with Ubay ibn Khalaf over the Surah al-Rum prophecy: Abu Bakr backed the Romans to overcome the Persians — proven right on the day of Badr.
At Uhud he reached the wounded Prophet ﷺ and, with Abu Ubaydah, tended the arrows embedded in his face.

At Hudaybiyyah (EP 063–066)

The counsel. When the Prophet ﷺ took counsel on the road, Abu Bakr advised pressing on peacefully — “you came only for the House of Allah; fight only if they fight you” — which the Prophet ﷺ adopted.
The curse at Urwah. When the envoy Urwah disparaged the Companions, the ever-gentle Abu Bakr, out of ghayra for the Prophet ﷺ, lost his temper and hurled a vile curse at Urwah’s idol — “Do you think we would abandon him?!”
Putting Umar right. When Umar brought his objection to Abu Bakr, Abu Bakr answered — unprompted — with the very words the Prophet ﷺ had used, showing his superior fiqh: “He is the Messenger of Allah; hold to his stirrup.” (As he would again at the Prophet’s ﷺ death.)

Tabuk — “Allah and His Messenger” (EP 087)

When the Prophet ﷺ called for funds for the Jaysh al-Usrah, Umar brought half his wealth hoping to outdo him — but Abu Bakr brought all of it. Asked “what did you leave your family?” he replied, “I left them Allah and His Messenger.” Umar conceded he could never compete with such Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah). A distinction only Abu Bakr could act on — even Umar did not.

Leading the Hajj & the Verse of the Sword (EP 099)

The Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Bakr with 300 to lead the Hajj of 9 AH and purge the pilgrimage of paganism and naked tawaf. When Ali overtook him to proclaim the opening of Surah al-Tawba, Abu Bakr asked, “Are you sent as commander over me?” — “No, you remain the amir.” The last Hajj at which pagans and Muslims performed the rites together.

The succession — leading the salah (EP 101)

In the final illness the honours converged on Abu Bakr: “were I to take a khalil it would be Abu Bakr”; all Masjid doors closed “except the door of Abu Bakr”; and, unable to lead, the Prophet ﷺ insisted (against Aisha’s attempts to deflect it) “let Abu Bakr lead the people… Allah and the believers refuse anyone but Abu Bakr.” At one Zuhr the Prophet ﷺ prayed seated with Abu Bakr standing beside him — the ummah following Abu Bakr who followed the Prophet ﷺ.

At the death — steadying the ummah (EP 101)

Arriving from Awali, he kissed the Prophet’s ﷺ forehead (“how beautiful you are in life and death”), then quelled Umar’s denial from the minbar with the immortal line: “Whoever worshipped Muhammad — Muhammad has died; whoever worshipped Allah — Allah is Ever-Living,” reciting Q 3:144, at which Umar collapsed. He also recalled “a prophet is buried where he dies,” settling the burial place.

Later

First caliph (11–13 AH); consolidated Arabia in the Ridda wars; died 13 AH / 634 CE. (Beyond the seerah proper.)
