The Muakha (Brotherhood of Muhajirun & Ansar)

The Prophet ﷺ’s pairing of each emigrant with a native believer — from akhi (“my brother”) — one of the first institutions he established in Madinah, binding the Muhajirun and the Ansar into families of faith.

How it appears in the Seerah

He ﷺ personally paired every male Muhajir with an Ansari (100+ pairs), matching them so well by temperament and standing that the pairs recur together throughout the Seerah (e.g. Abu Bakr & Kharijah ibn Zayd). In this first stage the bond was so complete they inherited from one another — later abrogated once the Muhajirun had their own families:

“…but blood relatives are more entitled [to inheritance] in the Book of Allah.” — Quran 8:75 (revealed after Badr).

The institution continued to the end of his life (Ja’far & Mu’adh ibn Jabal in 7 AH; even Mu’awiya after the Conquest), so it is a living sunnah, not a one-time act.

The generosity of the Ansar (Q 59:9)

Allah praised them: “…they give preference over themselves, even in poverty.” An Ansari offered to split his wealth — and even one of his two wives — with Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who declined: “just show me the marketplace.” Yet the Prophet ﷺ refused the Ansar’s offer to give half their land, insisting the Muhajirun work for their share — guarding the bond from future resentment.

Lessons

A society grows on strong bonds; the strongest is the bond of religion (Q 49:10), which broke the old system of “you are who your father was.”
The Muhajirun still rank above the Ansar (praised first in Q 9:100, 9:117, 59:8) — yet loving the Ansar is “a sign of iman” (Bukhari & Muslim).
A true leader implements, not merely advises — he ﷺ sat and paired them by hand.
