Madinah (Yathrib)

Yathrib renamed al-Madinah; the second Haram; capital of the first Muslim state.

The oasis city ~7–8 days’ caravan north of Mecca that became the capital of the first Muslim community after the Hijra. Originally Yathrib, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ renamed it al-Madinah (“The City”), also calling it Tabah / Taybah (“the Pure”). It is the second Haram of Islam.

Why Madinah was chosen (EP 028)

Strategic distance from Mecca; natural defences (volcanic labba east and west, dense palms south — only the north needed the trench of Khandaq); an independent, unconquered people; the Prophet’s ﷺ blood tie (his great-grandfather Hashim married Salma of the Banu al-Najjar there — grandfather of Abd al-Muttalib); and the Bu’ath war which had cleared the entrenched old leadership, leaving a young generation hungry for change.
