The poor Companions who lived under the shaded platform (Suffa) at the back of Masjid al-Nabawi — Islam’s first “university” as much as a shelter.
Origin
As the number of Muhajirun and new converts outgrew the households that had adopted them (especially after Badr, ~Ramadan 2 AH), the roofed section of the mosque became a public shelter. Its residents — the Ahl al-Suffa — gave up everything and lived in the masjid.
How they appear in the Seerah
- Extreme poverty: women were told not to raise their heads from sajdah until the men’s ragged garments were covered; food (dates) was hung on a string between two pillars so they could eat without begging. The Prophet ﷺ constantly redirected charity to them (the story of the one cup of milk shared among 30–40, narrated by Abu Hurairah).
- A place of learning: its most famous inhabitant, Abu Hurairah, became the #1 narrator of hadith precisely by clinging to the mosque and the Prophet ﷺ on an empty stomach. Ka’b ibn Malik, Hanzala, Abu Dharr, Suhayb and Ibn Mas’ud were among those who joined it. Delegations lodged there to learn Quran and fiqh before returning to teach their people.
- Many were memorisers of the Quran; so many died in the Ridda wars (Yamama, 12 AH) that Umar urged Abu Bakr to compile the Quran.
Martyred at Bir Ma’una (EP 051–060)
The ~70 reciters treacherously massacred at Bir Ma’una were mostly drawn from the Ahl al-Suffa — men “known for their Quran, their tahajjud, and filling the Ansar’s water-buckets” by day to earn their keep. Their slaughter was one of the gravest blows the Muslims suffered, and the Prophet ﷺ grieved them deeply.
