Suhayb al-Rumi (ra)

An early Companion — ethnically an Arab of a northern tribe, but raised a captive among the Romans (hence “al-Rumi”) — whose Hijra to Madinah cost him his entire fortune, earning a Quranic commendation.

Backgrounds (EP 014, 026)

Enslaved young and sold to the Romans, later freed and become a Meccan businessman in the house of Abdullah ibn Jud’an. Closest friend of Ammar ibn Yasir; the two accepted Islam together among the early converts.

Role in the Seerah (EP 026)

When Quraysh blocked his emigration, Suhayb bought his passage by surrendering all his hidden wealth — arriving in Madinah with only the clothes on his back. The Prophet ﷺ, informed by Jibril, greeted him: “Your transaction has profited, O Abu Yahya!” — a reference to Quran 2:207, “There are those who sell themselves seeking Allah’s pleasure.”
