Mecca
Birthplace of the Prophet ﷺ; the sanctuary (al-Haram) of Quraysh.
The sanctuary city (al-Haram) of the Ka’bah in the Hijaz — home of Quraysh and birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Geography & sanctity
- A barren valley with no agriculture, sustained by trade and pilgrimage, centred on the Ka’bah and the well of Zamzam.
- Al-Haram (“the Sacred”): hunting and even plucking vegetation are forbidden; “whoever enters it is safe” (Quran 3:97) — a sanctity from Ibrahim (as).
Significance in the Seerah (EP 004–006)
-
Religious centre of Arabia since Ibrahim (as); by the Prophet’s ﷺ time filled with ~360 idols and the paganism introduced by Amr ibn Luhay al-Khuza'i — see Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic Arabia).
-
Ruled by the clans of Quraysh, among whom Banu Hashim held custodial honours (Zamzam, pilgrim provisioning).
-
Site of the Year of the Elephant, the rebuilding of the Ka’bah, and (at Hira) the first revelation.
-
The persecution years (EP 012–020). After the proclamation on Mount Safa, Mecca became the arena of Quraysh’s opposition and the torture of the weak; the believers met secretly at Dar al-Arqam behind Safa. The Boycott forced Banu Hashim into a valley outside the city; after the Year of Sorrow the Prophet ﷺ briefly left it for Ta’if before returning under Mut’im’s protection.
