Cave of Hira (Ghar Hira)
Ghar Hira on Jabal al-Nour, where the first revelation descended.
Hijri year 1 of revelation CE c. 610 CE
The crevice near the summit of Jabal al-Nour (“Mountain of Light”) outside Mecca where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ retreated to worship and where the first revelation descended.
Significance (EP 010)
- Before the mission, the Prophet ﷺ loved seclusion, spending nights here in worship, provisioned by Khadijah.
- Here Jibril (as) came in Ramadan, pressed him thrice, and revealed Surah al-Alaq (96:1–5), “Iqra bismi Rabbika alladhi khalaq…”
- The cave holds only one person and faces the Ka’bah, still visible from it; Ibn Ishaq notes Abd al-Muttalib also used to meditate there.
