Key takeaways
- Sourcing discipline modelled. Yasir Qadhi repeatedly distinguishes authentic reports (Bukhari/Muslim, Ibn Ishaq with isnad) from later legends. He explicitly rejects popular birth-legends (born circumcised, in sajdah, etc.) — “the facts are enough.”
- Lineage. The Prophet ﷺ is the 20th generation from Adnan (a descendant of Ismail (as)); the Adnan→Ismail and Ismail→Adam links are uncertain (al-Tabari lists 7+ opinions). His line runs through the purest clans of Quraysh.
- Birth. In the Year of the Elephant (~570 CE), on a Monday, in Rabi’ al-Awwal — but the day is genuinely disputed; the popular 12th is weaker (Ibn Ishaq, no isnad) than the 2nd/8th/10th.
- Character before prophethood. Shepherd, honest merchant (“al-Amin”), active in civic justice (Hilf al-Fudul (Pact of Virtue)), chosen to place the Black Stone — his reputation was built long before revelation.
- Revelation. Began with 6 months of true dreams, then Iqra (Surah al-Alaq 96:1–5) in the Cave of Hira during Ramadan; confirmed by Waraqa. Khadijah was the first believer.

Open questions
- Exact day of birth in Rabi’ al-Awwal (2nd / 8th / 10th / 12th — Yasir Qadhi favours the earlier, better-attested dates over the popular 12th).
- Khadijah’s age at marriage: popular “40” (al-Waqidi) vs. the better-attested 28 (Ibn Ishaq via al-Hakim, Ibn al-Kalbi) — Yasir Qadhi favours 28.
- Number of generations between Adnan and Ismail (unknown; 7–41 reported).
- Several pre-prophethood miracle reports (the sheltering cloud, Bahira the monk) are flagged by Yasir Qadhi as not authentically established — recorded but not asserted.
