Seerah (and why we study it)
What the seerah is, why we study it, and its primary sources.
Definition
Seerah (سيرة, from s-y-r, “to travel/journey”) means a biography — literally “travelling someone’s path.” Scholars now reserve the term for the biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His mission spanned only 23 years (13 Meccan, 10 Medinan).
Why study it (EP 003)
- Allah commands taking the Prophet ﷺ as the exemplar (Quran 33:21; 50+ such verses).
- It is the most powerful way to increase love for him ﷺ.
- It is needed to understand the Quran (context of revelation, e.g. Surah al-Duha).
- It lifts hope and gives optimism in trials (Quran 11:120).
- The seerah is itself a miracle and proof of prophethood (Ibn Hazm).
- It lays out a methodology to revive the ummah.
- It preserves the lives of the best generation — the Sahaba.
- It equips us to defend his ﷺ honour.
Primary sources of the seerah (EP 003)
- The Quran — revealed during the seerah (not chronological, rarely names events).
- Hadith — esp. the Kutub al-Sittah (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah).
- Dedicated seerah books — the foundational Ibn Ishaq Sirat Rasul Allah (d. 150 AH, compiled with isnad), preserved via Ibn Hisham (d. 218 AH). Earlier works (al-Zuhri, Urwah) are lost, absorbed into later ones.
- Shama’il (characteristics, e.g. al-Tirmidhi) and Dala’il (proofs, al-Bayhaqi).
- Histories of the Sahaba and of Mecca & Medina; plus modern Roman/Persian sources.
Reliability principle
Islam is unique in its isnad (chain of narration). Reports are graded sahih / hasan / da’if. Yasir Qadhi (EP 003) models rejecting well-known legends even when flattering (e.g. birth miracles) — “the facts are enough.”
