The Year of the Elephant
Abraha's failed attack on the Ka'bah, c. 570 CE; the Prophet's ﷺ birth year.

The year — c. 570 CE — in which Abraha, the Abyssinian (Christian) viceroy of Yemen, marched with an elephant army to destroy the Ka’bah, and was miraculously routed. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born this year.
What happened (EP 005–006)
- Abraha built a grand church in Yemen and, angered that Arabs still revered Mecca, advanced to demolish the Ka’bah.
- Abd al-Muttalib, chief of Quraysh, went only to reclaim his seized camels: “The House has a Lord who will protect it.” Quraysh withdrew to the hills.
- The lead elephant (Mahmud) refused to advance on the Ka’bah; then birds (Ababil) pelted the army with stones, destroying them — recounted in Surah al-Fil (105). Abraha died of his wounds.
Significance
Allah defended the Ka’bah when its pagan custodians could not — a sign that one worthy of it was coming. Aminah was carrying the Prophet ﷺ at the time. Companions (Qubath ibn Ashyam, Aisha) later recalled physical traces of the elephants, anchoring the birth year.
