Baqi al-Gharqad (Jannat al-Baqi)
Al-Baqi', the cemetery of Madinah; resting place of most of the wives & Companions.
The principal cemetery of Madinah, burial place of most of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ and of countless Companions.
Geography
The main graveyard of Madinah, adjacent to the city; originally a plot of gharqad (boxthorn) trees, from which it takes its name.
Significance in the Seerah
Al-Baqi’ is the resting place of a great many of the earliest Muslims. Most of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ were buried here, among them Sawda bint Zam’a, Hafsa bint Umar, Zaynab bint Khuzayma — noted as the first of the wives to be buried in al-Baqi’ — Umm Salama, and Juwayriyya bint al-Harith, along with innumerable Companions.
By contrast, Khadijah — who died in Makkah before the Hijra — is buried at al-Hujun, the cemetery of Makkah, not at al-Baqi’.
