The Prophet's ﷺ infant son by Maria; his death and the eclipse khutbah.

The Prophet’s ﷺ infant son by Maria the Copt — his only child born in Madinah, who died at about a year and a half, occasioning the famous eclipse khutbah.
One-line: the Prophet’s ﷺ baby son whose death drew “the eye weeps, the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord.”
Identity & lineage
Son of the Prophet ﷺ and Maria al-Qibtiyya; named after the Prophet Ibrahim (as), the Prophet’s ﷺ “father” in faith. A wet-nurse of the Ansar was found (women competed for the honour).
Role in the Seerah
- Birth — Dhu al-Hijjah 8 AH; the Prophet ﷺ came to the Masjid beaming: “a boy was born to me last night; I have named him after my father Ibrahim.” His birth freed Maria (umm al-walad).
- Death — in the first quarter of 10 AH, aged ~1½ (the tenderest age). Holding the wheezing child, the Prophet’s ﷺ tears fell; asked “you too weep?” he answered: “The eye weeps and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord; and truly, O Ibrahim, we are grieved at your departure.” A model of sabr — control the tongue and limbs, not the emotions. Janazah was prayed (four takbirat); he was buried in Baqi’.
- The solar eclipse — an eclipse fell the day he died, and people said “the sun grieves for Ibrahim.” The Prophet ﷺ pointedly corrected them: “the sun and moon are signs of Allah; they do not eclipse for anyone’s death or life” — a proof of his sincerity (he refused an easy “miracle”).
Character & lessons
- Wisdoms of his early death discussed: Q 33:40 (“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men” — rijal, never fulfilled for a son who never became a man); a statement of Anas that had he lived he would have been “a truthful prophet” (majority: Anas’s own ijtihad, not the Prophet’s ﷺ word, and no prophet after Muhammad ﷺ); and the political wisdom of no surviving male lineage.
- His death is a window onto the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime of personal loss — mother, grandfather, wife, uncle, and every child but Fatima.
Death
Died early 10 AH, aged ~1 year 4–6 months; buried in Baqi’ al-Gharqad.
