Key takeaways
- Two massacres of the qurra (EP 051). Emboldened by Uhud, Bedouin tribes struck. After the lone assassination of a Hudhayl chieftain by Abdullah ibn Unays, ~10 Companions were trapped at al-Raji — the martyr Khubayb ibn Adi sold to be executed in Makkah (he began the sunnah of two rak’at before execution). The same night, ~70 of the best reciters — mostly Ahl al-Suffa — were slaughtered at Bir Ma’una by Amir ibn al-Tufayl, the worst massacre of the Seerah. The Prophet ﷺ prayed qunut al-nazila for a month and paid blood-money even for two men killed in error — establishing that he ﷺ did not know the unseen.
- The Prophet’s ﷺ household (EP 052). A survey of the wives married by ~4 AH: Sawda (who gave her night to Aisha), Aisha, Hafsa, Zaynab bint Khuzayma (Umm al-Masakin, who died in his lifetime), and Umm Salama. The laws of hijab and the final prohibition of khamr were revealed in this window.
- Between the battles (EP 052). Badr al-Maw’id (the “Second Badr” the Quraysh failed to keep) and Ghazwa Dhat al-Riqa — where the procedure of Salat al-Khawf (Q 4:102) was revealed, Ghawrath’s assassination attempt failed (“Who will protect you from me?” — “Allah”), and the beloved story of Jabir‘s camel unfolded (both grouped here).
- Expulsion of Banu Nadir (EP 053). After a rock-drop assassination bid (Jibril warned the Prophet ﷺ), the tribe was besieged and exiled to Khaybar. Surah al-Hashr was revealed whole — introducing the law of fay’ (property gained without fighting, given to the Muhajirun) and exposing Abdullah ibn Ubayy‘s empty promise word for word. This period also gave the sabab al-nuzul of “no compulsion in religion” (Q 2:256) and the final ban on alcohol (Q 5:90).
- Banu al-Mustaliq → the Slander (EP 054–056). An almost bloodless dawn victory over Banu al-Mustaliq (The Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq); marriage to Juwayriyya led the whole tribe to Islam. On the return, the hypocrites’ near-mutiny produced Surah al-Munafiqun (Q 63), and then the month-long Slander of Aisha (rha) — ended when Surah al-Nur (Q 24) declared her innocence from above the seven heavens. The Prophet’s ﷺ refusal to kill Abdullah ibn Ubayy introduced maslaha as a source of law.
- The Battle of Khandaq / al-Ahzab (EP 057–060). Salman al-Farisi’s Persian trench idea met the ~10,000-strong Confederates (Quraysh, Ghatafan & allies, financed by the exiled Banu Nadir) against ~3,000 Muslims. Highlights: the food-miracle (barakah) and the al-Sham/Persia/Yemen prophecies; the treachery of Banu Qurayza; Ali slaying Amr ibn Abd Wud; the death-wound of Sa’d ibn Mu’adh; Nuaym ibn Mas’ud and the Sabbath splitting the alliance; Hudhayfah’s night reconnaissance; and the wind (Saba) and unseen angels (Q 33:9, 25) scattering the enemy. With ~6 Muslim deaths, it was the turning point: “Now we march on them; they will not march on us.” (Banu Qurayza’s reckoning follows in the next source.)

Reliability (schema §5)
- Khandaq’s date — a genuine dispute: Bukhari/al-Zuhri/al-Nawawi/Ibn Hazm say Shawwal 4 AH (Ibn Umar’s authentic hadith); the seerah specialists say Shawwal 5 AH — followed here, since Sa’d ibn Mu’adh’s death (post-Khandaq, 5 AH) and Badr al-Maw’id (4 AH) anchor it there.
- The Slander (al-Ifk) — among the most authentic episodes in the Seerah (Aisha’s own long narration in Bukhari & Muslim). Out of adab, no classical book ever states the accusation itself; the wiki page follows suit and does the same.
- The Banu Nadir & Banu Qurayza — framed as punishment for treason/treaty-violation, not for being Jews; the Nadir dating dispute (post-Badr per Urwah/al-Zuhri vs Shawwal 4 AH per Ibn Ishaq/al-Waqidi/Ibn Sa’d) is preserved. Naskh al-Tilawah (Bir Ma’una verses) noted.
- Khandaq’s finer detail — Ibn Ishaq’s Huyayy–Ka’b dialogue is “without chain,” Nuaym’s account is uniquely al-Waqidi, the angel-horsemen are via al-Bayhaqi, and the trench dimensions are modern estimation; the miracles and Sa’d’s death are in Bukhari/Muslim.
Open questions
- Dating of al-Muraysi’/the Slander and of Khandaq — the 4/5/6 AH tangle (the Sa’d ibn Mu’adh vs Zaynab bint Jahsh conflict of narrators).
- Al-Hasan’s birth — Ramadan 4 AH vs Sha’ban 5 AH; and death dates for several new Companions (Aisha, Zayd ibn Thabit, Zayd ibn Arqam, Hassan, Jabir, Salman, Safiyyah) not fixed in the lectures.
- Banu Qurayza’s judgment — treated from EP 061 onward; (resolved: see The Judgment of Banu Qurayza).
