Huyayy ibn Akhtab
Chief of Banu Nadir; father of Safiyyah; arch-instigator of the Ahzab.
Hijri d. 5 AH CE d. c. 627 CE
A chief of the Jewish tribe Banu Nadir of Madinah and one of the most implacable opponents of the Prophet ﷺ — the man who chose war over exile at the expulsion of Banu Nadir and later became the chief instigator of the Confederates at the Battle of Khandaq.
Identity & lineage
Chieftain of Banu Nadir; brother of Abu Yasir ibn Akhtab and father of Safiyyah bint Huyayy — who would later embrace Islam and become a wife of the Prophet ﷺ. Safiyyah’s own testimony captures her father’s enmity: when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, her father and uncle went to see him, hoping “maybe this is the one” (the awaited prophet). They returned so absorbed they ignored the little girl they usually doted on. Her uncle asked, “Is he the one?” Her father said, “By Allah, he is.” — “What will you do?” — “To be his enemy as long as I live!” He recognised the truth yet rejected it because the Prophet ﷺ was not a Jew.
Role in the Seerah
- Precipitating war with Banu Nadir. When Abdullah ibn Ubayy secretly promised the tribe protection, Huyayy believed him and pushed his people to defiance, overruling those who wanted no fight (their inner division is noted in Q 59:14). His message — “we have decided to stay, so do what you want” — brought on the siege and the tribe’s exile to Khaybar.
- Architect of the Confederates. From Khaybar, Huyayy became the prime mover behind the great alliance at Khandaq (5 AH), and it was he who went into Madinah and seduced Banu Qurayza into treachery, persuading them to break their covenant during the siege.
Death (EP 061)
He had shut himself inside the Qurayza fortress out of loyalty to his treachery, and was executed together with Banu Qurayza when their treason was judged. Led out in his finest red garment, cut to pieces so it could not be taken, he told the Prophet ﷺ, “I have never regretted my enmity toward you — but whom Allah humiliates is truly humiliated,” then bared his neck. His hidden gold — carried off when Banu Nadir were exiled — was later extracted at Khaybar from his kinsman Sa’ya (via al-Zubayr), found buried in a valley. His daughter Safiyyah — widowed at Khaybar — embraced Islam and became a wife of the Prophet ﷺ.
Character & lessons
A study in knowing the truth and still refusing it out of tribal pride — as his daughter testified, he acknowledged the Prophet ﷺ as “the one” and chose lifelong enmity anyway. His career shows how a single determined agitator can drag whole tribes into ruin.
