Safwan ibn Muattal (ra)
The Companion who found Aisha in the desert; wrongly implicated in al-Ifk.

The noble Companion who found Aisha (rha) alone in the desert on the return from al-Muraysi’ and led her camel back in silence — the man wrongly implicated in the Slander (al-Ifk), of whom the Prophet ﷺ said he “knew nothing but good.”
Identity & lineage
Safwan ibn Muattal al-Sulami. At the time of the Slander he was young, upright, and not yet married (he married after the event).
Role in the Seerah
On the way back from the Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq (5 AH), Safwan was lagging behind the army, having overslept the order to depart. Making his way back alone, he came upon a lone figure in the desert and recognised it as Aisha (rha) — he had seen her before the verse of hijab was revealed.
Key episodes
- Finding Aisha (rha). He said only “La hawla wa la quwwata illa biLlah,” lowered his camel for her, turned his back and walked ahead so as not to see her mount, then led the camel by hand all the way to rejoin the army. Aisha (rha) testified he never spoke one further word to her — a true gentleman.
- Wrongly accused. Because she arrived with him, Abdullah ibn Ubayy seized on it to start the rumour. In the masjid the Prophet ﷺ publicly praised him: “And even this man they mention, I know nothing but good about him.”
- His own oath. Safwan swore, “By the One in whose Hand is my soul, I have never lifted the veil of a woman in my life.”
- The sword incident. Hearing Hassan ibn Thabit repeat the rumour before the matter was settled, Safwan struck him with the blunt edge of his sword. Brought before the Prophet ﷺ, the ruling went for Hassan (one may not take the law into one’s own hands), though Safwan’s anger was for a legitimate cause.
Character & lessons
Modesty, restraint, and honour — the very qualities the slander denied him were the ones the Prophet ﷺ and the Quran affirmed. A reminder that Allah defends the innocent.
Death
Died a martyr fighting in Armenia in the reign of Umar (ra), 16 AH.
