Zayd ibn Thabit (ra)

The young Ansari scribe of the Prophet ﷺ who learned Hebrew in fifteen days, was among the chief huffaz, and later became the primary compiler of the Quran — so that the structure of the mushaf as we have it today traces back to him.

Identity & lineage

An Ansari of Madinah, very young at the Hijra — about 11 years old when the Prophet ﷺ arrived. His tribe introduced him to the Prophet ﷺ, noting he had already memorised several surahs of the Quran.

Role in the Seerah

• Learning Hebrew. The Prophet ﷺ wanted a trustworthy Companion who knew the Jews’ language, and chose Zayd — a shrewd choice on three counts: he was young and sharp-minded, he had already memorised Quran, and he had grown up among Jewish neighbours (it is said he even attended their schools) so he had some background in the tongue. He mastered it — reading and writing — in 15 days flat, a sign of the eagerness of the sahaba and his own genius.

Key episodes

• Compiler of the Quran. After the Prophet ﷺ, Allah chose Zayd — through Abu Bakr and Umar — to be the main compiler of the Quran, and again under Uthman for the standard copies. The order of the mushaf, its chapter arrangement as Muslims have it now, came through him — “we owe a lot to Zayd ibn Thabit” (Yasir Qadhi).

Character & lessons

Chosen for trustworthiness above all; his youth, memory, and diligence made him the ideal custodian of both a foreign language and, ultimately, the preserved text of the Quran itself.
