Ghanima (Spoils of War)
The spoils of war (Surah al-Anfal); its mishandling cost the Muslims Uhud.

Ghanima (غنيمة) — the property taken from a defeated enemy; the subject of Surah al-Anfal (“the spoils,” Q 8), revealed around Badr. Its mishandling at Uhud — Companions breaking ranks to collect booty — was the human cause of that battle’s reversal.
Definition & rulings
- Anfal belongs to Allah and His Messenger (Q 8:1): the spoils are pooled and distributed, not seized privately. Q 8:41 sets aside a khums (one-fifth) for Allah and the Messenger, his kin, orphans, the poor and the wayfarer; the rest is shared among the army — every fighter equally (beyond what one takes personally from an enemy he kills).
- To snatch and hide spoils is a major sin; goods are collected, piled and apportioned correctly.
How it appears in the Seerah
- Badr: the first spoils; a dispute over shares drew the rebuke of Q 8:1. The Sariyya of Qarada later delivered 50,000+ dirhams without a fight.
- Uhud — the fatal distraction. With the rules not yet fully known, the Muslims — sure the war was won — left their posts to gather booty; the 50 archers abandoned Jabal al-Ruma, opening the gap that Khalid ibn al-Walid exploited. Yasir Qadhi: those who chased the booty got neither the spoils nor the victory — “the reality of those who prefer the dunya over the akhira.”
Ghanima vs fay’ (EP 051–060)
The Banu Nadir expulsion introduced a distinct category: fay’ — property gained without fighting, riding, or bloodshed (Q 59:6–7). Because “you spurred neither horse nor camel” for it, fay’ is not shared out among an army like ghanima; it belongs to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ to allot (to the Muhajirun, the poor and needy), and is governed by its own rules in fiqh.
Lessons
The pull of hubb al-dunya (love of the world) can undo obedience and unity; Q 3:152 ties the Uhud defeat directly to “some of you desired this world.”
