Amr ibn Abd Wud

The feared Qurayshi champion — in the red turban of death — who leapt the trench at Khandaq and was slain by Ali.

Identity & lineage

One of the elders of Quraysh, renowned for his ferocity in battle — reckoned among the great warriors of the pagans.

Role in the Seerah

At the Battle of Khandaq, with a small band of about five riders he found a gap and broke across the trench where no Muslims were posted. Wearing a red turban — a recognised sign that its bearer meant death — he issued an open challenge to single combat.

Key episodes

• The triple challenge — Amr called out “Who will fight me?” three times. Each time Ali rose; twice the Prophet ﷺ held him back (“this is Amr ibn Abd Wud”), and only on the third, seeing Ali’s zeal (“even if it is Amr ibn Abd Wud”), let him go.
• His death — dismissing Ali as a mere youth (“go back and send a man”), Amr was answered “but I desire to kill you.” In the dust of the clash (Ibn Ishaq: the horses’ dust hid the fight until a takbir rang out) Ali took a shield-shattering blow yet, in the same instant, drove his sword into Amr’s neck — one clean, skilled stroke.

Character & lessons

An emblem of pagan pride and martial reputation humbled: the celebrated champion felled by a young Companion whose faith and skill the Prophet ﷺ trusted. His fall was among the few real feats of arms in a battle Allah decided chiefly by wind and stratagem, not swords.

Death

Killed by Ali ibn Abi Talib at the trench, Khandaq (Shawwal 5 AH / 627 CE).
