Uthman ibn Affan (ra)

An early convert, of the noble Banu Umayya (Banu Abd Shams), one of the Ten Promised Paradise, husband of two of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughters (Dhu al-Nurayn, “possessor of the two lights”), and later the third caliph. He appears in the seerah most prominently as the Prophet’s ﷺ chosen envoy at Hudaybiyyah.

Identity & lineage

Uthman ibn Affan ibn al-As ibn Umayya — first cousin once-removed of Abu Sufyan; among the earliest converts (brought by Abu Bakr). Married Ruqayyah and, after her, Umm Kulthum, daughters of the Prophet ﷺ. Famed for modesty — “Should I not be shy of one of whom the angels are shy?” (Bukhari & Muslim).

The emissary to Makkah (EP 064–065)

When the Quraysh refused every neutral envoy, the Prophet ﷺ needed a Qurayshi Muslim. Umar, asked first, deferred: his own enmity with Quraysh would sink the mission, and “Uthman has more nobility in their eyes.” Uthman entered Makkah under the protection of his cousin Aban ibn Sa’id, delivered the message, and comforted the persecuted Muslims still trapped there — but the Quraysh would not relent, and detained him.

The Pledge of Ridwan (EP 065)

His long absence bred the rumour he had been killed, triggering the Bay’at al-Ridwan. The Prophet ﷺ took the oath on Uthman’s behalf, clasping his own left hand in his right — “this is for Uthman.” When Uthman returned, he refused even to do tawaf ahead of the Prophet ﷺ: “I would not, though I stayed in Makkah a year.” His three “absences” (Uhud flight, Badr, Ridwan) were each answered by Ibn Umar as excused or honoured (Q 3:155; his marriage to the dying Ruqayyah during Badr; the Prophet’s ﷺ hand for him at Ridwan).

Financing the Army of Difficulty (EP 087, 090)

For Tabuk Uthman gave the lion’s share — selling a caravan just returned from Syria (~1,000 gold dinars and 300 laden camels) and pouring the wealth before the Prophet ﷺ, who turned it in his hands and said, “Nothing Uthman does after today will harm him.” Ibn Abbas later used this hadith to defend Uthman against the neo-kharijites who besieged him in 35 AH.

Later

Third caliph (23–35 AH); compiler of the standard mushaf; martyred 35 AH / 656 CE at the hands of rebels. (His caliphate and the fitna are far beyond the early seerah.)

Character & lessons

Modesty, generosity, and adab toward the Prophet ﷺ; a cornerstone of the Sunni honouring of the sahaba — for Allah affirmed the people of Ridwan in the Quran, and the Prophet ﷺ stood in Uthman’s place.
