Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis / al-Masjid al-Aqsa)
Bayt al-Maqdis / al-Aqsa; first qibla; destination of the Night Journey.
The blessed city and sanctuary that was the first qibla of Islam and the destination of the Prophet’s ﷺ Night Journey, from which he ascended to the heavens. Referenced in Surah al-Isra 17:1 — “…from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed.”
Significance in the Seerah (EP 021–023)
- Destination of al-Isra. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ rode al-Buraq from Mecca to Bayt al-Maqdis, tied it to the prophets’ post, and led all previous prophets in prayer there before the ascension.
- At the time the site was under Roman control and, per the transcript, had been deliberately reduced to a refuse-dump by the Christians to spite the Jews — yet the Prophet ﷺ was shown it restored (the original Temple of Sulayman as), a sign of Allah’s power beyond ordinary time and space.
- After the night, when Quraysh demanded proof, he described the city accurately as Allah raised its image before him.
The two sanctuaries and Jerusalem’s rank (EP 028)
- Jerusalem is a land of great blessing — the first qibla, extra reward for prayer — but it is not a Haram in the fiqh sense (its game may be hunted), unlike Mecca and Madinah, the two Harams (al-Haramayn al-Sharifayn). “Every Haram is blessed, but not every blessed land is a Haram.”
- Yasir Qadhi notes al-Isra links the two prophetic traditions of Ibrahim’s (as) sons — Ismail (as) (Mecca) and Ishaq (as) (Jerusalem) — with precedence to Mecca, where the journey began and ended. Umar (ra) later cleansed and built on the site.
