Usama ibn Zayd (ra)

Son of Zayd ibn Harithah and Umm Ayman, born and raised in the Prophet’s ﷺ household and beloved by him — Hibb Rasulillah, “the beloved of the Messenger of Allah” (and “son of the beloved”). Appears in this source in the incident of the Makhzumi thief and is a recurring figure of the Prophet’s ﷺ tender love.

One-line: the Prophet’s ﷺ cherished young Companion, “the beloved son of the beloved.”

Identity & lineage

Son of Zayd ibn Harithah (the only Companion named in the Quran) and Umm Ayman. Raised in the Prophet’s ﷺ house; darker-skinned like his mother.

Role in the Seerah

• The Makhzumi thief (EP 081): when a noblewoman of Banu Makhzum was caught stealing after the Conquest, her people sent Usama — knowing the Prophet’s ﷺ love for him — to intercede against the punishment. The Prophet ﷺ was angered: “Do you intercede regarding one of the boundaries of Allah? By Allah, if Fatima daughter of Muhammad stole, I would cut her hand.” A landmark of equal justice — the law does not spare the noble.
• Earlier, at Tabuk’s period, the reference to Usama killing a man who had said the shahada in battle (“Did you open his heart?”) illustrates that a declaration of faith must be accepted even on the battlefield.
• The final expedition (EP 101). In Safar 11 AH the Prophet ﷺ appointed the ~17-year-old Usama to lead an army against Byzantine Palestine — over senior Companions — silencing the murmurs (“you criticised his father’s leadership before him… he is worthy, and the most beloved of people to me after his father”). The army halted at his illness; Usama came back to see him among the last visitors — the Prophet ﷺ, unable to speak, pointing up and to Usama in blessing. After his death Abu Bakr insisted the expedition go forward (“how can I recall an army the Prophet ﷺ dispatched?”), and it became the first Muslim army to defeat the Romans, opening the path to the conquest of al-Sham and Jerusalem.

Character & lessons

His standing is a study in the Prophet’s ﷺ affection and in impartial justice transcending status and intercession.

Death

Died c. 54 AH, having withdrawn from the later civil strife.
