al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (ra)
Uncle who vouched at the Second Pledge while still a pagan.
Hijri d. 32 AH CE d. 653 CE
Uncle of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, son of Abd al-Muttalib and near-contemporary (a ~3-year difference) and foster-brother of the Prophet ﷺ. Long a loyal protector while still a pagan, he converted much later.
Role in the Seerah (EP 025)
- Though not yet a Muslim, al-Abbas accompanied the Prophet ﷺ to the secret Second Pledge of Aqabah out of tribal loyalty, speaking first to press the Ansar to be sure they could truly protect his nephew.
- He distrusted the “young faces” of the Ansar (thinking in terms of jahili tribalism), but his presence shows the natural love the Banu Hashim held for the Prophet ﷺ — like Abu Talib before him.
Captured at Badr (EP 037, 039)
Forced by the Quraysh to march to Badr (still a pagan), he was among the men the Prophet ﷺ ordered not to be killed — Banu Hashim fought under compulsion. He was taken prisoner by a small Ansari; embarrassed, al-Abbas protested he had been captured by “a handsome rider on a black-and-white horse” — an angel, the Prophet ﷺ told the Ansari. He was ransomed with the other captives.
Secret Muslim and spy (EP 041–050)
As a POW at Badr he paid a high ransom (plus that of his two nephews). The Prophet’s ﷺ knowledge of his hidden gold — buried with his wife Umm al-Fadl, known to no one else — sealed his sincere faith (Q 8:70). He then returned to Makkah as a secret Muslim spy, sending the Prophet ﷺ advance warning of the Quraysh army before Uhud; his servant reached Madinah in 3 days.
The last Muhajir & the Conquest (EP 078–079)
Emigrating at last as the army marched, he met the Prophet ﷺ at Juhfa and became the last of the Muhajirun (“no Hijra after the Conquest”; a weak report: “you are the last of the Muhajirun as I am the last of the Messengers”). On the eve of the Conquest he rode out on the Prophet’s ﷺ mule, found Abu Sufyan, and brought him safely through the camp to Islam — then had him watch the banners pass. It was al-Abbas who secured Abu Sufyan’s house as a sanctuary and urged him to warn Makkah not to fight.
Honour & legacy
Honoured with the siqāya (watering of the pilgrims). The Prophet ﷺ: “a man’s uncle is like his father — do not hurt my uncle.” In the drought of 18 AH, Umar made tawassul through al-Abbas’s du’a for rain. He was loud-voiced — at Hunayn (EP 082), when the army broke and fled, it was al-Abbas who at the Prophet’s ﷺ command bellowed the tribes back name by name (the people of Ridwan first), turning the rout into the rally. He lived to ~85 (d. 32 AH), and his line founded the Abbasid caliphate (750–1517 CE).
