Masjid Quba

The first masjid built in Islam, in the settlement of Quba on the Makkah-side edge of Madinah, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ first stopped on arrival before entering the city.

Geography & the stay at Quba

Quba was Madinah’s farthest settlement toward Makkah, so its people met the Prophet ﷺ first. He arrived around high noon on a Monday (Ibn Ishaq) and lodged with Kulthum ibn al-Hidm (the first Companion to die in Madinah after the arrival), spending days at the bachelor Sa’d ibn Khaythama’s house for receiving guests.

Building & blessing

He ﷺ laid the first stone once Ali arrived (~2–3 days later); Ali and Abu Bakr continued, then the Ansar. He did not see it completed, leaving on Friday morning for central Madinah (praying his first Jumu’ah en route, in Banu Salama’s area).

• Q 9:108 — “a mosque founded on taqwa from the first day” — is applied by the majority to Masjid Quba (contrasted with the munafiqun’s Masjid al-Dirar); another authentic hadith applies it to Masjid al-Nabawi. Yasir Qadhi: both are meant.
• Hadith: “Whoever makes wudu at home and prays two rak’at in Masjid Quba earns the reward of an Umrah.” The Prophet ﷺ would ride out to Quba weekly, usually on a Monday.
