The Incident of Masjid al-Dirar
The "mosque of harm" razed on the return from Tabuk (Q 9:107–109).
Hijri 9 AH CE 630 CE
The “Mosque of Harm” — a mosque built by the munafiqun of Madinah as a rival base to subvert the community, exposed and ordered demolished on the Prophet’s ﷺ return from Tabuk (9 AH). Allah condemns it by name in Surah al-Tawba 9:107–109. It was the last organised stand of the hypocrites; after it, they did nothing.
Date (Hijri / CE)
Built shortly before Tabuk (9 AH); operative ~one month; destroyed on the return journey.
Background
- As the munafiqun mocked the donors and gave excuses to avoid Tabuk (Q 9:79; the man mocked for a handful of dates), they built their own mosque a short walk from Masjid Quba — ostensibly for “the weak and the rain,” in truth to preach and plot free of the believers’ oversight.
- Its real architect was Abu Amir “the Monk” — a Christian elder of the Aws who had lost his bid for leadership when the Prophet ﷺ arrived, fled to Makkah and then to the Byzantines, and wrote to Ibn Ubayy to make him a base in Madinah for a Roman-backed revolt. The mosque was to be its headquarters.
What happened
- The builders invited the Prophet ﷺ to bless it with two rak’at. Uneasy, he ﷺ deferred: “We are preparing to travel; insha’Allah when I return.” He never prayed there.
- On the way back from Tabuk, Jibril brought down Q 9:107–109, naming the mosque one of: harm (dirar), kufr, division among the believers, and a station for one who had warred against Allah and His Messenger (Abu Amir). The Prophet ﷺ sent Ammar ibn Yasir and others to burn it to the ground.
- The Prophet’s ﷺ du’a against Abu Amir — “may you die a stranger” — was fulfilled: he died alone in Byzantine lands.
“The mosque founded on taqwa”
Q 9:108 contrasts Dirar with a mosque “founded on taqwa from the first day.” Three views on which: Masjid Quba (Abu Dawud/Tirmidhi — praised for using water in istinja’), the Prophet’s Mosque (an authentic hadith in Musnad Ahmad — the Prophet ﷺ swore it was “this mosque”), or — the correct, inclusive reading — any mosque built on taqwa.
Lessons
- A mosque can become a “masjid dirar” if built for corrupt ends — but the label is grave: it implies kufr and warrants demolition. It is not to be flung at a community that merely splits off over a sincere disagreement or follows a different scholar. “Let them build; if sincere it will flourish, if not Allah will expose them.”
- Deeds — even mosque-building — are judged by intention.
Reliability (schema §5)
The condemnation is explicit Quran (9:107–109); the demolition and Abu Amir’s role are in the maghazi and tafsir (Ibn Ishaq, al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir). The Quba/Nabawi identification hadiths are in Abu Dawud/Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad respectively.
