Abu Amir al-Rahib

A Christian elder of the Aws — “Abu Amir the Monk” — who refused Islam, became an inveterate enemy of the Prophet ﷺ, and was the true instigator behind Masjid al-Dirar. The Quran calls him “one who had warred against Allah and His Messenger” (Q 9:107).

One-line: the Aws monk-turned-enemy who plotted a Byzantine-backed revolt from a rival mosque.

Identity & role

A respected pre-Islamic Christian ascetic of Yathrib who had expected leadership before the Prophet’s ﷺ arrival. He rejected Islam, and after Badr fled to Makkah. Before Uhud he boasted the Aws would follow him — but none did, and he returned humiliated. He then went to the Byzantine court and wrote to Abdullah ibn Ubayy to prepare a base in Madinah for a Roman-backed revolt — the plan behind Masjid al-Dirar, ordered destroyed on the Prophet’s ﷺ return from Tabuk.

The Prophet’s ﷺ du’a against him — “may you die a stranger” — was fulfilled: he died alone in Byzantine lands, without family or friends.
