Mount Uhud
The mountain north of Madinah; site of the Battle of Uhud and the martyrs' graves.
A chain of mountains over a mile long just north of Madinah, giving its name to the Battle of Uhud (3 AH) fought at its foot. Beloved of the Prophet ﷺ, who said “Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it” (Bukhari).
Geography
- Not a single peak but a range >1 mile long, north of the old city. In the Prophet’s ﷺ time a real gap of open ground separated it from Madinah; today the city reaches its base.
- At its side stands the small hill Jabal al-Ruma (“Mountain of the Archers,” then called Jabal Aynayn) — where the Prophet ﷺ posted the 50 archers whose abandonment of the post decided the battle.
- Uhud lies inside the Haram of Madinah, whose bounds (Bukhari) run between the mountains Thawr (a small hill north of Uhud) and Ayr to the south, and the two volcanic plains (harra) east and west.
Significance in the Seerah
- The Prophet ﷺ chose Uhud deliberately: backs to the mountain reduced the exposed sides, letting 700 Muslims hold against 3,000 Quraysh — a feat of natural fortification.
- Ahadith of Uhud: “Uhud is a mountain of Jannah.” When it trembled beneath the Prophet ﷺ with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, he said, “Be still, Uhud — on you are but a prophet, a siddiq, and two martyrs” (Muslim) — foretelling the deaths of Umar and Uthman.
- Site of the graves of the martyrs of Uhud, chief among them Hamzah, Sayyid al-Shuhada. The Prophet ﷺ visited them and, in the last week of his life, made an emotional farewell du’a for them.
