The Ansari martyr of Uhud who rallied the shaken believers and fell bearing over eighty wounds.
Identity & lineage
- Uncle of Anas ibn Malik, the famous servant of the Prophet ﷺ and prolific hadith narrator.
Role & key episodes
- At the Battle of Uhud, when the rumor spread that “the Prophet ﷺ has been killed” and the Companions sat down defeated, Anas rebuked them: “Even if the Prophet ﷺ has been killed, the Lord of the Prophet ﷺ has not been killed! Get up and die for what he died for.”
- Meeting Sa’d ibn Mu’adh, he declared: “I can smell the fragrance of Jannah from beyond Uhud!”
- He charged into the enemy and fought until his body bore over 80 wounds — so mutilated he was unrecognizable, identified only by his sister via his fingertips.
Character & lessons
- The Quran was revealed concerning such men: “Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah” (Q 33:23).
- Reliability: the account is recorded in Sahih Bukhari.
