Mus'ab ibn Umayr (ra)
First teacher/ambassador of Islam to Yathrib; martyr of Uhud.
Hijri d. 3 AH CE d. 625 CE (Uhud)
The young Qurayshi Companion sent by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Yathrib as its first teacher and da’i after the First Pledge of Aqabah — effectively the first ambassador of Islam, whose year of quiet teaching turned a handful of converts into a city ready to receive the Prophet ﷺ.
Role in the Seerah (EP 025)
- After the 12 pledged at the First Aqabah, Mus’ab returned with them to teach the Quran and lead prayer, hosted by As’ad ibn Zurarah. He led the first Jumu’ah in Islamic history.
- His calm confidence won over the Aws chiefs Usayd ibn Hudayr and Sa’d ibn Mu’adh — each came to expel him with a spear and left a Muslim — bringing whole sub-tribes with them.
- In one year he converted an estimated 250–300 people; ~73 came to give the Second Pledge.
Character & lessons
Once the most pampered youth of Mecca, he embraced hardship for Islam. His method — “Sit and listen; if you find it good, take it; if not, I will stop” — models patient, confident da’wah over confrontation.
Death (EP 048)
At Uhud (3 AH) he was the Muslim flag-bearer. His right hand was cut off — he took the banner in his left; then his left was cut off — and he held it with his stumps until he was killed, likely by Khalid‘s forces. He resembled the Prophet ﷺ, so his killer Abdullah ibn Qami’a cried “I have killed Muhammad!”, spreading the false rumour of the Prophet’s ﷺ death. His shroud was too short to cover both head and feet; the feet were covered with idhkhir (lemongrass) — the famous hadith of Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (Bukhari).
