Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith (ra)
The Prophet's ﷺ cousin & former mocker who converted before the Conquest.

A first cousin and former foster-brother of the Prophet ﷺ — a poet who once mocked him bitterly — who converted just before the Conquest and became a devoted Companion. (Not to be confused with Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, the Quraysh war-chief and father of Mu’awiya.)
Identity & lineage
Abu Sufyan (al-Mughira) ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib — son of al-Harith, the eldest son of Abd al-Muttalib; thus paternal first cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, and near him in age and upbringing. Before Islam he was known for poetry ridiculing the Prophet ﷺ — the worst slander of that age.
Role in the Seerah
As the army neared Makkah, he set out with his young son Ja’far to convert. Turned away at first (“I have no need for them” — a deliberate test of sincerity), he begged, threatening to wander into the desert to die, until the Prophet’s ﷺ soft heart admitted him. He recited a penitent poem; when he reached the line “a guide other than myself guided me to Allah… whom I repelled at every turn,” the Prophet ﷺ tapped his chest — “yes, wallāhi, you repelled me every time you could” — a brotherly reproach revealing a real, human hurt.
Character & lessons
His case shows the Prophet ﷺ treating people according to who they are — the higher standard for a cousin who knew better — while still opening the door to a sincere returner. His Iman proved firm: he showed conspicuous bravery afterward, notably at Hunayn, standing fast beside the Prophet ﷺ.
Death
Died 20 AH, in the caliphate of Umar; remembered as one who deeply repented and dedicated himself to the Prophet ﷺ.
