Najran

A largely Christian province on the southern edge of the Hejaz (the southernmost part of modern Saudi Arabia, above Yemen), with strong ties to the Roman emperor. Famous in the seerah for the delegation of its Christians and the Verse of Mutual Cursing.

One-line: the Christian province whose 60-man delegation occasioned the Mubahala — and a jizya treaty, not war.

Geography

Southernmost province of the Hejaz, bordering Yemen; its people had a distinct complexion and hair (the Prophet ﷺ remarked they “looked like the people of Hind”).

Significance in the Seerah

• The delegation of the Christians of Najran (during the Year of Delegations) — 60 delegates, including 24 nobles, three bishops and a patriarch, came dressed in Roman-style garb and were allowed to pray inside the Prophet’s ﷺ Masjid (facing east). Days of dialogue about Isa (as) drew the opening ~60 verses of Surah Ali-Imran, including “the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as that of Adam” (Q 3:59) and “Abraham was neither Jew nor Christian” (Q 3:67).
• The Mubahala (Q 3:61) — invited to invoke Allah’s curse on the lying party, they declined (“if he is a prophet we shall be obliterated”) and accepted jizya (cloth and silver, “for as long as Allah wills”). Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah was sent as their judge.
• A senior of Najran privately admitted the Prophet ﷺ was the awaited prophet but rejected him for Roman honours and wealth — his younger brother, shocked, converted.
• Khalid ibn al-Walid was later sent (early 10 AH) with a three-day ultimatum; the whole province embraced Islam. Amr ibn Hazm was appointed its teacher-governor — the recipient of the Prophet’s ﷺ last dictated letter (the “touch the Quran only in purity” ruling). Umar (ra) later relocated them to keep Arabia purely Muslim.
