Abdullah ibn Rawaha (ra)
Ansari poet & third commander-martyr of Mu'tah ("victory or shahāda").

An elite Ansari poet of the Khazraj — one of the pledgers of Aqabah — the Prophet’s ﷺ war-poet alongside Hassan ibn Thabit, and the third commander and a martyr of Mu’tah.
Identity & lineage
Abdullah ibn Rawaha al-Ansari al-Khazraji — of the elite who took the Second Pledge of Aqabah. In his lifetime he was the more celebrated poet; Hassan is better known to later ages only because Ibn Rawaha died early. He was on a distinct level of piety.
Role in the Seerah
- The Prophet ﷺ sent him from Badr to Madinah with the good news of victory.
- The embodiment of “we hear and we obey” — hearing the Prophet ﷺ say “sit down” (to others), he sat at the masjid door on the spot; the Prophet ﷺ smiled and made du’a for him.
- At Umrat al-Qada he chanted poetry against the Quraysh; when Umar objected, the Prophet ﷺ said his words “are more painful to Quraysh than arrows.”
- Mu’tah (8 AH). Appointed third commander after Zayd and Ja’far. On the road he wept — not from love of dunya but from Q 19:71 (crossing over the Fire). When the army faltered before the vast enemy, his speech turned them: “what you fear is what you came for — victory or shahāda.” Taking the banner after Ja’far fell, he hesitated, rebuked his own soul in verse — “O my soul… do you not want Jannah?” — then plunged in and was martyred.
Character & lessons
His pause at Mu’tah is the seerah’s clearest portrait that bravery is conquering fear, not the absence of it — the sahaba were human, and their Iman overcame their fear. The Prophet ﷺ said, “What a great man is Abdullah ibn Rawaha.”
Death
Martyred at Mu’tah, Jumada al-Awwal 8 AH; buried with Zayd and Ja’far. The Prophet ﷺ described his death in Madinah as it happened, weeping (Bukhari & Muslim).
