Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (ra)

Cousin of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — son of Abu Talib and elder brother of Ali — and the leader and spokesman of the Muslims in Abyssinia, remembered for his eloquent defence before the Najashi.

Leader in Abyssinia (EP 017)

He headed the larger second migration (80+ Muslims) to Abyssinia. When the Quraysh envoys (Amr ibn al-As and a companion) came bribing the Najashi to extradite the Muslims, Ja’far — refusing to prostrate to the king — delivered the celebrated speech: “O King, we were a people of ignorance, worshipping idols… until Allah sent us a Messenger whose truthfulness we knew…” He then recited the opening of Surah Maryam (on Jesus and his mother), moving the Najashi and his bishops to tears.

Second test (EP 017)

When Amr returned claiming the Muslims blasphemed Jesus, Ja’far answered wisely and truthfully — that Jesus is “the servant, Messenger, and Word of Allah, born of the Virgin Mary” — winning the Najashi’s protection outright. Yasir Qadhi’s key lesson: the Companions used the system of the land to secure justice, without compromising creed.

Return & Umrat al-Qada (EP 068, 072)

Returned to Madinah at Khaybar (7 AH), the Prophet ﷺ kissing him and saying “I do not know which makes me happier — the conquest of Khaybar or the return of Ja’far.” At Umrat al-Qada he was awarded the guardianship of his niece Umāra bint Hamzah (“the khāla is as the mother”), and the Prophet ﷺ told him “you resemble me in form and character.”

Martyrdom at Mu’tah (EP 073)

Appointed second commander at Mu’tah (8 AH). After Zayd fell he took the banner and fought one of the most valorous fights in the seerah — both hands severed, clutching the flag to his chest with his stumps — until cut in two. Ibn Umar counted 90+ wounds, all in front. The Prophet ﷺ saw him in a vision “flying in Jannah with two wings in place of his hands” — hence Dhu al-Janāḥayn / al-Tayyar. His household’s wailing, and the Prophet’s ﷺ care for his orphans Abdullah and Muhammad ibn Ja’far, followed (fiqh of mourning — see The Battle of Mu'tah).
