Uthman ibn Talha (ra)

The hereditary key-holder (ḥājib) of the Ka’bah — of the Banu Abd al-Dar — who converted with Khalid and Amr ibn al-As just before the Conquest, and to whom the Prophet ﷺ restored the keys on the day Makkah fell.

Identity & lineage

Uthman ibn Talha al-Abdari, of the Banu Abd al-Dar — the clan entrusted since Qusayy with the sidāna (custodianship) of the Ka’bah. He is one of the three symbolic converts (with the military genius Khalid and the statesman Amr) who entered Madinah together as the last batch before the Conquest (Q 57:10).

Role in the Seerah

When the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah, cleansed the Ka’bah and held its keys, Ali asked that custody be combined with the Banu Hashim’s water-office. Instead the Prophet ﷺ called for Uthman: “Take your keys, O Uthman — today is the day of fulfilling trusts and returning what is due,” fulfilling “Allah commands you to render trusts to their owners” (Q 4:58). The keys have remained with his descendants (Banu Abd al-Dar / al-Shaybi) to this day. (Yasir Qadhi notes an earlier “blessings of Uthman ibn Talha” episode on the honour of this custodianship.)

Character & lessons

His story is the seerah’s model of honouring a trust regardless of tribe or old enmity — the office was not seized as spoils but returned to its rightful holder, even at the peak of the Prophet’s ﷺ power.

Died 42 AH.
