Shayba ibn Uthman (ra)

A distant cousin of the Prophet ﷺ from the Banu Abd al-Dar whose heart was turned to true faith in the very moment he came to kill the Prophet ﷺ at the Battle of Hunayn.

One-line: the man who charged to kill the Prophet ﷺ at Hunayn and left the battle a believer.

Role in the Seerah

His father, Uthman ibn Abi Talha, had been killed fighting the Muslims at Uhud. Newly and outwardly Muslim since the Conquest but still bitter, Shayba saw the Prophet ﷺ seemingly exposed at Hunayn and rushed to take revenge. A blinding light drove him back; the Prophet ﷺ turned, made du’a — “O Allah, guide Shayba” — and iman entered his heart at once. He fought at the Prophet’s ﷺ side thereafter and lived a pious life. (His clan retained the custodianship of the Ka’bah’s key.)
