Wa'il ibn Hujr (ra)

A prince of Hadhramaut in Yemen who came in the Year of Delegations to embrace Islam of his own accord — honoured by the Prophet ﷺ as few others were.

One-line: the royal convert seated on the Prophet’s ﷺ own minbar and cloak — “I will give you better than a kingdom.”

Identity & lineage

Of royal blood — his great-grandfather was one of the petty-kings of Yemen; from Hadhramaut.

Role in the Seerah

• The Prophet ﷺ foretold his coming: “there shall come to you Wa’il ibn Hujr, one of the nobles of Yemen, wishing Islam without pressure” — and honoured him as almost no one else: bringing him up onto the minbar, seating him on his own rida’ (cloak), and making du’a for him and his children.
• When Wa’il lamented losing his right to the throne, the Prophet ﷺ replied, “I will give you better than that” — i.e. Jannah, whose least dweller is given the riches of the world tenfold.
• “What goes around comes around” — sent home escorted by the young, poor Mu’awiya ibn Abi Sufyan, Wa’il haughtily refused to let him ride or even wear his sandals on the hot stones. Decades later Mu’awiya was caliph, and Wa’il came to his court — “how I wish I had done it,” Wa’il admitted. A lesson against selfishness and short sight.

Character & lessons

His early rough manners (“it does not befit kings…”) show that Iman perfects character over time; and his fate with Mu’awiya illustrates the turning of Allah’s decree.

Death

Lived long; sided with Ali at Siffin (37 AH) — as the Yemenis generally did.
