al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba (ra)

A Companion of Thaqif who stood guard over the Prophet ﷺ at Hudaybiyyah — fending off his own uncle Urwah ibn Mas’ud — and whose past is a study in how Islam draws a hard line under ill-gotten gain.

Story (EP 064)

In his youth Mughira was a bandit who, with his gang, committed highway robbery and murder; the resulting blood-money ruined Thaqif’s standing. He fled, heard of Islam, converted, and came to Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ accepted his Islam but refused every coin of his stolen wealth — even though it was taken from pagans — because the life and property of non-belligerents are sacred in Islam. So Mughira started from nothing and became a well-known Companion (a frequent hadith narrator).

At Hudaybiyyah

He stood beside the Prophet ﷺ like a bodyguard; when Urwah kept reaching for the Prophet’s ﷺ beard, Mughira struck his hand away with a sword-hilt: “Take your hand from the beard of the Messenger of Allah before it is cut off.” Urwah recognised his own grand-nephew and rebuked him for the old treachery against Thaqif — which Mughira could not deny.

Character & lessons

A living refutation of the “highway robber” slur against the early Muslims: not only did they not rob, they refused to receive what had been robbed. Islam wiped his slate clean — but not his victims’ rights.
