Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl (ra) — Seerah Encyclopedia

Son of Abu Jahal who fought the Muslims at Uhud to avenge his father, later embraced Islam, and died a martyr.

Identity & lineage

Driven by revenge for his father’s death at Badr, he became a frontline Quraysh commander at Uhud, leading the left flank — mirroring Khalid on the right.

After Uhud: in the Quraysh debate over whether to turn back and finish the Muslims (the events surrounding Hamra al-Asad), Ikrimah pushed hardest to return — arguing “we haven’t done anything worthy of honor yet.” The Quraysh were ultimately deterred by the ruse of Ma’bad al-Khuza’i, who exaggerated Muslim strength.
The Conquest & conversion (EP 076, 079). He was among the few who tried to fight back as the army entered, and was on the Prophet’s ﷺ short proscription list. He fled by ship toward Abyssinia; caught in a storm, the pagan captain’s own admission that “only Allah can help now” struck him — “if our gods cannot help us in need, why worship them?” — and he vowed Islam. He returned, and the Prophet ﷺ forgave and welcomed him.

A prime example of Yasir Qadhi’s recurring point: nearly every senior Quraysh leader at Uhud was eventually guided to Islam — testament to the Prophet’s ﷺ prayer for his enemies’ guidance rather than their destruction. Even those named for execution were mostly forgiven.

Martyred at the Battle of Yarmouk (15 AH) against the Romans — the famous scene of three dying Companions (Ikrimah, al-Harith ibn Hisham, Ayyash) each deferring the last water to the other until all had died. (Some place his martyrdom earlier, ~13 AH.)
