Abu Jahal (Amr ibn Hisham)

Chief of Banu Makhzum; "Fir'awn of the ummah"; killed at Badr.

Chief of Banu Makhzum and the foremost persecutor of the early Muslims — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called him the “Fir’awn (Pharaoh) of this ummah.” His kunya was Abu al-Hakam (“father of wisdom”); the Muslims renamed him Abu Jahal (“father of ignorance”).

Role in the persecution (EP 013–015, 018)

Toward the Hijra (EP 023, 026–027)

The du’a and Badr

He was one of the men the Prophet ﷺ named in du’a after the entrails incident; Ibn Mas’ud saw every one of them slain and cast into the well of Badr (2 AH). His enmity ran opposite to the Prophet’s ﷺ du’a that Allah strengthen Islam through “the dearer of the two Umars — Umar or Abu Jahal” — and it was Umar who was chosen.

His death at Badr (EP 036–039)

The undisputed leader of the ~1,000-strong Quraysh at Badr, he overrode every attempt to avert the battle — dismissing his scout Umayr, Utbah’s plea, and Hakim ibn Hizam’s blood-money truce, taunting Utbah into the fatal duel. He made a du’a against himself (“let the worse of the two armies be destroyed”). Allah decreed him struck down by two Ansari teenagers, Mu’adh ibn Amr and Muawwidh ibn Afra’, and finished by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud — who found him dying, obstinate to the end, put a foot on his chest, and took his head. The Prophet ﷺ then declared over his body, “This was the Fir’awn of this ummah — the only time he said it.
