Utbah ibn Rabi'ah

A senior Quraysh nobleman — a “second-tier” chief just below Abu Jahal — remembered as the one who, though a pagan, tried hardest to prevent the Battle of Badr, yet died in its opening duel.

Identity & lineage

Of Banu Abd Shams; father of the Companion Abu Hudhayfah ibn Utbah and of Hind (wife of Abu Sufyan). It was Utbah who earlier sent grapes to the Prophet ﷺ after Ta’if (via the slave Addas).

Role in the Seerah

At Badr he urged the Quraysh to turn back — “even if you win you will be the losers, for you will have killed your own kin” — offering to pay the blood-money of al-Hadrami himself. He was the “man on the red camel” whom the Prophet ﷺ praised: “If there is any good among them, it is in that man.” But when Abu Jahal taunted him as a coward, he flipped and led the mubaraza with his brother Shaybah and son al-Walid — all three killed by Hamzah, Ali and Ubaydah.

Lessons

Yasir Qadhi draws the point that a person can be good and bad at once: even an idolater may hold principles (here, revulsion at fratricidal war) worthy of respect — the Prophet ﷺ called his counsel “wise” though it sprang from tribalism, not faith.

Death

Killed in the mubaraza at Badr, 2 AH. His son Abu Hudhayfah (a Muslim) grieved him — “I knew in him wisdom and forbearance.”
