Tufayl ibn Amr al-Dawsi (ra)

The poet-chief of the Yemeni tribe of Daws, converted in Makkah despite the Quraysh’s warnings — and the man who brought Abu Hurairah into Islam.

One-line: the chief who stuffed his ears against the Prophet ﷺ, then heard him anyway — and gave the ummah Abu Hurairah.

Role in the Seerah

• Conversion in Makkah (~7th year of the mission) — warned by the Quraysh, he stuffed cotton in his ears at the Ka’bah, yet still heard the Prophet ﷺ recite and was moved; reproaching himself (“I am a man who knows truth from falsehood”), he listened, and embraced Islam on the spot (reportedly after hearing only al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas). The Prophet ﷺ made du’a: “O Allah, guide Daws and bring them.”
• He offered the Prophet ﷺ refuge in his tribe’s fortress — declined, as Allah had willed Yathrib.
• Returned to Daws; his family and, in time, 80+ households converted at his hands. He later emigrated to Madinah (around Khaybar), giving up his chieftaincy to be a Muhajir — and brought with him Abu Hurairah.

Character & lessons

A study in the compounding reward of guidance: an obscure figure to most, yet every hasanah of the prolific narrator Abu Hurairah also flows to Tufayl who guided him — “never trivialise any good deed.”

Death

Fell as a martyr in the Wars of Ridda (Battle of Yamama, 11–12 AH), against Musaylimah.
