Da'wah & Its Five Stages

The call to Islam and its five legitimate stages.

Da’wah (دعوة) — the call/invitation to Islam. From the seerah, Yasir Qadhi (EP 012) draws five legitimate stages, each valid for a Muslim community depending on its circumstances; the da’i chooses the stage that fits, and none is inherently superior.

Private vs. secret (EP 012)

The earliest Meccan da’wah was private, not secret — an “open secret.” Rumours spread (a Yemeni, Amr ibn Abasa, even came asking), but the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ preached only to trusted friends and family for the first three years. Wisdom: avoiding confrontation, building iman and brotherhood, and forming leaders. Islam permits private da’wah under fear of persecution, but never secrecy — one always teaches a sincere seeker.

The five stages

  1. Private da’wah — no public confrontation (the first 3 Meccan years).
  2. Public da’wah, no fighting — peaceful preaching, no retaliation (the bulk of the Meccan years; see The Declaration of Prophethood (Public Da'wah)).
  3. Da’wah with fighting a specific enemy — early Medina, only against Quraysh.
  4. Open da’wah with honour (izzah), defensive force only — Hudaybiyyah to the Conquest; the state most of the caliphate lived by.
  5. Open da’wah confronting all opposition — the stage at the Prophet’s ﷺ death, continued by the Companions’ conquests.
